Welcome to Glasgow Live. The first app guide from Start Travel. The idea is simple enough. Take an offbeat destination and explain why you should go there. Take a well-known destination, and explain what you might have missed on your first trip.

We start with Glasgow. Our city. In tourism terms, compared to Edinburgh, Glasgow is the poor cousin. The industrial city. Meaner. Grittier. Wetter.

But Glasgow is extraordinary in many ways and in one way in particular. It throbs with music. It is a city of gigs. Of bands. Of sweaty mosh pits. Of pounding beats. Great clubs. Fabulous buskers. It has even been recognised by Unesco as an international City of Music.

We have three main guides to the city. Malcolm Jack, music critic for the Guardian and Big Issue, takes us on a tour of Glasgow’s better and lesser known music venues. From record stores to arenas. And recalls the bands that made them so special.

Moff is our house photographer for this project. His live images ooze with atmosphere. And Walking Heads have allowed us to use part of their audio tour, with Scottish broadcaster Jim Gellatly making his own way round some of Glasgow’s most famous music landmarks. We also speak to up and comers Honeyblood.
